The NRHA World Youth Reining Cup brings together talented young riders from NRHA affiliates around the world
for an unforgettable international reining experience.

Each participating affiliate is invited to nominate a youth rider to represent their country. As the official NRHA affiliate in South Africa, NRHA South Africa (NRHASA) manages the local application and selection process for South Africa’s representative.The event offers much more than an opportunity to compete. It gives young riders the chance to develop their horsemanship, experience international competition, learn from leading professionals and form friendships with fellow reiners from across the world.

How the World Youth Reining Cup works:

Unlike most competitions, riders do not take their own horses to the World Youth Reining Cup. Suitable reining horses are made available by owners in the host country and are allocated to the participating riders through a random draw. Riders are then given a limited amount of time to get to know and prepare their allocated horse before the competition. This unique format tests more than a rider’s ability to perform a reining pattern. It requires adaptability, confidence, sound horsemanship and the ability to develop a partnership with an unfamiliar horse in a short period of time. The venue, dates, schedule, entry fees and other event conditions may change from year to year.

Who may apply?

The final eligibility requirements are determined by NRHA and the event organisers each year. Unless otherwise specified for a particular event, applicants wishing to represent South Africa should meet the following requirements:

Be eligible to compete as an NRHA Youth rider for the relevant competition year
Be a current NRHA member in good standing (minimum 1 year)
Have sufficient reining experience to ride an unfamiliar competition horse safely and confidently
Applicants will have an advantage, if actively participating in NRHASA shows, clinics, youth activities
Be available for the full event and required travel period
Have the written support of a parent or legal guardian
Be able to travel with the companion required by the event organisers
Be willing and able to meet the anticipated travel and participation costs
Understand and accept the responsibilities associated with representing NRHASA and South Africa
Meeting the minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee selection

What should be included in an application?

A completed application form
A short rider biography
Details of reining experience, clinics, shows and competition results
A summary of involvement in NRHASA over the last year
A recent, unedited riding video
A motivation explaining why the rider would like to represent South Africa
Parent or guardian consent
Confirmation of availability for the event
A preliminary travel and funding plan
Confirmation that the applicant understands the role and responsibilities of the successful representative
The exact application requirements and deadlines will be published with the announcement for each year’s event

How is the South African representative selected?

NRHA allows each affiliate to determine its own selection process. NRHASA aims to conduct a fair and transparent assessment based on the overall suitability of each applicant.The selection is not based only on show results or the highest competition score. The assessment may consider:

Riding ability
The applicant’s ability to safely and competently ride a reining pattern and execute the required manoeuvres.
Adaptability and horsemanship
The ability to assess, understand and work with different horses while prioritising the horse’s welfare.
Experience and participation
Relevant participation in NRHASA shows, clinics, youth programmes and other recognised reining activities.
Sportsmanship and conduct
The rider’s behaviour toward horses, fellow competitors, officials, volunteers and the wider reining community.
Coachability and maturity
The ability to receive guidance, communicate responsibly and remain composed in an unfamiliar international environment.
Involvement in NRHASA
The applicant’s support of and participation in the South African reining community.
Representative readiness
The rider’s availability, travel readiness, family support, communication and realistic plan for meeting the costs and obligations of the trip. NRHASA may request an interview, an additional riding assessment or further supporting information before making its final decision.

Responsibilities of the successful representative

Selection is both an honor and a commitment. The successful applicant becomes an ambassador for South Africa, NRHASA and the sport of reining. The selected representative will be expected to:

Maintain valid NRHA membership
Complete all registrations, travel documents, payments and administrative requirements by the stated deadlines
Attend all compulsory event activities, including the horse draw, welcome functions, riding sessions, briefings and competition
Follow all NRHA rules, event conditions and horse-welfare requirements
Treat the allocated horse, its owner and the host team with care and respect
Demonstrate good sportsmanship and appropriate conduct throughout the trip
Wear supplied NRHASA clothing or merchandise at agreed official functions, media opportunities and other appropriate times
Acknowledge NRHASA and relevant sponsors in agreed social-media posts, interviews and event coverage
Assist NRHASA with appropriate content before, during and after the event
Represent South Africa and NRHASA positively both in person and online
Provide NRHASA with suitable photographs, videos and updates from the event
Submit a short reflection or event report after returning to South Africa
Continue supporting and promoting youth reining and NRHASA activities following the event
A parent, guardian or travelling companion should help ensure that these commitments are fulfilled, particularly where the representative is a minor.
